Topic Overview

Our winters are famous for being colder than Mars and the North Pole.  The lucky ones escape by jetting off while the rest of us must defend ourselves against the cold.

Indoor environmental quality has many aspects, and thermal comfort is certainly an important factor.  We often think that mechanical designers are responsible for comfort, since they control air temperature, air flow and humidity.  However, essential elements such as drafts, mean radiant temperature and temperature asymmetry are heavily dependent on the building envelope.

In this presentation we will explore the causes of thermal discomfort, solutions that provide better working and living environments, and promote the economic benefits of thermal comfort.  It will include an overview of ASHRAE Standard 55-Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, and explore some tools that help design more comfortable spaces.
